Schedule Overview for Laptop Institute 2008

This year's schedule will again offer over 80 sessions on topics ranging from assessing the effectiveness of existing 1:1 iniatiatives to the how-to's of teaching with laptops. Presenters come from laptop programs across the world and bring years of experience and ideas to our conference.

Overall Conference Schedule:

    Sousan Arafeh

    • Remind Me Why I Teach? Laptops, Life and Education in the 21st Century
      • Why do you teach?  Is it because learning excites you and you want to pass that on?  Was school a tough place for you and you vowed to make things better?  Do you do it for the money or the glory?  Do you do it because you love to see that bright “aha!”  Do you do it now for the same reasons that you did it then?  Why do you teach?  Why are you an educator (teacher or administrator)  Using this key question as a point of departure, Dr. Arafeh takes you on a journey that combines research, futurism and humor in a grounded discussion of 21st Century students, skills, education and “technology.”  Not one to let her audience sit back, she’ll ask for participation (without embarrassment) so that by the end of evening you’ll find your perspective irrevocably changed, your commitment to education renewed and your excitement for technology and one-to-one computing revitalized.

    • Ten Things to Do with a Computer: Learning and Powerful Ideas
      • I began leading professional development in the world’s first two laptop schools in 1990. Student laptops fulfilled the dreams of children engaging in serious intellectual work and were a catalyst for educators to challenge traditional notions of teaching and learning. Between 1990 and 1995 I was at the center of a tsunami of educational innovation. Overtime, the pace of innovation has slowed.

Much of the skepticism about 1:1 computing is based on the meager or unimaginative objectives of 1:1 schools. The demands for accountability are inversely proportional to the use of laptops in profoundly interesting ways.

Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon wrote a paper in 1971 called, “Twenty Things to Do with a Computer.” Few of today’s schools, with or without laptops, satisfy the goals of that thirty-five year-old document. This presentation invokes the challenging vision of the earlier document, updates it and presents ideas for using laptops in ways that offer unprecedented learning adventures.

Using their own words, Deneen invites you to witness and connect to both the hope and discontent felt by these restless natives.
