1.  The Call for Proposals is open until January 15.  Remember, each presentation receives a $200 stipend!  Also, we have moved beyond just technology, so remember that your project based learning skills, readers workshop, athletic department initiatives, admissions strategies, general classroom best practices, and more are all considered to fit in this event!

2.  Registration is open and is already above the pace it was this time last year.  It is important that you register early and also get your rooms at the Peabody booked.  If you are a first time attendee, please note that it is very beneficial to bring multiple people from your school due to the basic fact you can’t be 10 places at once!

• Keynote speakers this year: Chris Lehmann, principal of the Science and      Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, will speak on Sunday      evening.  Tim Rylands, a creative and inspiring      educator, will speak on Monday morning.  Dr. Megan Salemi, teacher at the Neighborhood      School in Memphis, will speak about brain-based learning and research on      Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
• We are “ramping up” our pre-conference workshops to include a variety of       offerings, including sessions by our two keynote speakers.  Please      pay close attention to these workshops during your registration and as you      plan your travel.
• We are adding a third day to the conference that will include offerings      geared toward constructivist learning and curricular and leadership      workshops.   This portion of the conference will include a keynote speaker (Megan Salemi) on      Tuesday evening,      dinner, and a full day of workshops at Lausanne on Wednesday.  These      workshops are designed to go deeper in areas such as project based      learning, readers’ workshop in elementary grades, strategic planning in      independent schools, athletics operations, and advancement and admissions      sessions.  This portion is included for all      registrations but also can be attended separately from the main      event.
• I’m pleased to announce our 2013 School Spotlight, Cary      Academy from Cary, NC!       Congratulations to the commitment this innovative school has made to this      year’s event!

As I mentioned at the end of the 2012 Lausanne Laptop Institute, throughout our ten years we have seen quite a change in the direction and focus of the event.  Because of your continued support, involvement, and suggestions, we have been transitioning over the years from a device-centered (i.e., laptop) conference to more of a best practices, student engagement, pedagogical, and curricular focused, learning conference.  For this reason, we feel like a name change is in order! 

…..So, beginning this summer, our 11th year, the Lausanne Laptop Institute will be known as the Lausanne Learning Institute!

Collaboration and connecting with new and old colleagues is paramount to this event, and that core will continue.  We will still have a techie track, still have sessions that focus on administrative level planning, but will add more sessions that focus on things like student-centered teaching, innovative application, building professional learning communities, project based learning, thematic approaches, and more. 

What can you do to help?  Submit a proposal to present! As you know, Lausanne is the host of this event, but we are by no means the experts.  The experts are the collective yearly presentations offered by teachers, administrators, tech leaders, and trainers.  Keep in mind these suggested tracks when considering your proposal: Leadership, Digital Citizenship, 1:1 Program Planning and Design, Technical Aspects of a 1:1 Program, Subject-Specific Technology Uses, Training Teachers in Technology Integration, Library / Media Center role, Project—based learning, Innovative Applications, Readers’ Workshop, Writers’ Workshop, Building Professional Learning Communities, Teachers New to 1:1 Learning, School Identify, Vision, and Mission, Thematic Learning, Differentiation, Assessment, Arts, PE/Athletics.

In addition, I’d like to announce some other exciting news:

2. Door prizes this afternoon at the closing session! 3:15 in EPAC. Prizes will include: Sony Cyber Shot Cameras, Sony Bloggie Live, 3 IPEVO Point 2 View USB Cameras, Olympus camera, and iPad, two St. Jude collectors edition snow globes, and lots of fun other items! Must be present to win… and earn an extra drink ticket!

3. Join Dan and Matt and 2:00 in EPAC for a conversation about how the essential questions worked for you and how you might make them work for your school.

4. Looking for a quiet place to sit and meet? Head to EPAC! Our gallery on the left side has tables set up for those that want to have small group meetings, or just have a few minutes to recharge!

5. Enjoy the beautiful weather today, and sit outside at lunch! Just turn right when you come outside from the gym lobby and keep going until you see our courtyard and amphitheater.

6. Please rate your sessions using the app or the link above.

7. I expect to see you at Silky O’Sullivan’s at 6:30! Corner of 3rd and Beale (5 minute walk from the Peabody). We will have dinner, an awesome band on the patio, the piano guys, and just good old fashion fun! We have the whole place just to ourselves until 11 p.m….. band starts at 7:30.

I hope you had a great day today at the Lausanne Lapotp Institute!  Twitter was definitely trending the #li12 topics today!  A few notes to get your day tomorrow planned out:

Please download the app for all the details on the sessions, and please rate each session you attend!

1.  Busses begin at 6:45 from the Peabody.

2.  Breakfast will last until 9 a.m., and will be a full breakfast and plenty of it all morning (as opposed to the limited supply of tiny chicken bites we had today

3.  The first session starts at 9.

4.  Ice Cream, sponsored by LaptopSchools.com, will be available from 11 – 3 outside the sponsor lobby!

5.  Lunch will begin at 11:15 again, with a true smorgasbord of offerings!  6 different stations will provide a salad/deli bar, Mexican, Italian, Asian, Vegetarian, and Desserts! Click here for the menu!

6.  We will end the day at Lausanne with a short wrap up and DOOR PRIZES at 3:15 in EPAC.  All in attendance will be eligible for the door prize drawings (things like iPads, cameras, officially licensed Lausanne Laptop Institute polos, and more!).  And… all who attend will come away with an additional drink ticket for tomorrow night’s closing party at Silky O’Sullivan’s on Beale Street at 6:30!

7.   Airport shuttles will run from Lausanne at 12, 2, and 4. If you are flying out, plan on about 30 minutes to the airport from Lausanne.  You can bring your luggage with you and store it at at the school.

A few items:

- Follow us on Twitter using #li12 hashtag or@laptopinstitute

- Breakfast tomorrow will be dramatically improved (I’m told). And there will be plenty available even for the later arrivals.

- Snacks and drinks are available in all buildings all day long.

- Lunch will begin after the 10:15 session, and last until 2 p.m. (so if you see a long line, you might want to just wait and come back)

- There are plenty of outdoor eating areas available, just come out of the gym lobby and turn right.

- All of the session descriptions are located on our app and on our website.

- Tech support is available in the library (conference headquarters).

- Charging stations are set up in the Gallery of the EPAC theater

- You can also check in your device to be charged at the conference headquarters desk, and relax or go to lunch while it charges!

- Forget something at the Peabody? You can take a bus down anytime. Shuttles run all day until 4 p.m.
